RMMRU calls for stopping irregular labour migration

Refugee and Migratory Movements Research Unit (RMMRU), a research, training and advocacy center at the University of Dhaka on Sunday urged the government to stop illegal migration in disguise of tourist visas taking place via African country of Sudan.

'Bangladeshis are recently going to Libya through Sudan by taking tourist visas. It is not a good symptom for the country,' Dr. Tasneem Siddiqui, Chair, RMMRU at a press conference at National Press Club.

She said that the government would have to take a stern action against the broker agencies which were sending the country's tourists to Sudan as there was no tourism in Sudan.

'Rather the workers are being sent to Libya across border to where labour migration is totally closed by both countries,' she said.

Tasneem said that after going to Libya the people were crossing Mediterranean to enter Europe by taking risks of life.

RMMRU launched report on Pattern and Trends of Labour Migration 2015: Achievement and Challenge in the press conference.

According to the evaluation of RMMRU, overseas employment has significantly increased in 2015, but the remittance growth has decreased.
